FPL 2026/27 Rule Changes: What They Mean for Your GW1 Squad

FPL 2026/27 is here, and four confirmed changes will shape how the game plays this season. None of them rewrites the main scoring system, but two of them change who picks up bonus points, and one changes when your score is actually final. Here is what each one means before the GW1 deadline on Friday 21 August.

The Four Changes, and What They Actually Affect

1. Live points during matches

Points and ranks now update in real time while games are played. Your mini-league position moves mid-match instead of the following morning. To be clear about what this changes: nothing, tactically. Squad selection, transfers and chip timing are all untouched. It is purely the quality-of-life upgrade FPL needed, and deadline evenings just got a lot more watchable.

2. Tackle deduction removed from the bonus system

In previous seasons a player's bonus points score (BPS) took a -1 hit every time he was tackled. That deduction is gone for 2026/27. Note the scope: this is a change to the bonus system only, not to main scoring, so it is a marginal gain rather than a revolution. Where it matters is in tight bonus battles. Ball-carriers who invite contact, the Morgan Rogers and Jarrod Bowen profile, were quietly losing BPS every week, and their route to the 3, 2 and 1 bonus just got a little clearer.

3. Your score is now provisional until 9am the next morning

Points lock at 9am the morning after the gameweek's final match, rather than earlier. The reason is that Opta stat corrections now feed in before the lock. Fair warning about which way this cuts: an assist or a bonus point you appear to have won overnight can still be corrected away by morning. Final now genuinely means final, but do not celebrate a one-point mini-league lead until after 9am.

4. Defensive contribution points adjusted

DefCon points stay for 2026/27, with alterations designed to limit players earning both DefCon and bonus points in the same match, and to push more of that value toward attacking players. If you rostered defenders who were double-dipping on DefCon and bonus last season, expect their totals to come back to earth a little.

Carried over (and worth restating): one of each chip, per half

You get four chips in each half of the season: a wildcard, a free hit, a triple captain and a bench boost, with a fresh set after the mid-season reset. The strategy advice stands regardless: treat the first half as its own game, plan the first wildcard around the early international breaks, and do not hoard a triple captain you could fire before Christmas.

Who Benefits Most?

Neco Williams (Nottingham Forest) is one of the most interesting names of pre-season. Forest's new manager Oliver Glasner has brought the three-centre-back, wing-back system he used at Crystal Palace, and deployed it in both halves of the weekend friendly, with Williams impressing at wing-back. His underlying numbers were already there: 46 attacking attempts and 19 shots on target last season under the previous setup. Put that attacking profile into a proper wing-back role, and add the possibility that Glasner tightens up the clean sheets, and you can see the early-season bandwagon forming.

Morgan Rogers and Jarrod Bowen are the most-cited winners of the BPS tackle change. Both draw heavy contact as part of their game, which was costing them bonus points at the margins.
