How the FPL Bench Works: Autosubs and Bench Order

The bench is the part of an FPL squad most managers set in August and never look at again. It is also the only part that can score points without you making a decision.

Eleven days out from the Gameweek 6 deadline is a good moment to fix it.

How does the FPL bench work?

You pick a 15-man squad and name a starting XI from it. The official rules require that XI to hold one goalkeeper, at least three defenders, at least two midfielders and at least one forward.

The four players left over form the bench: your reserve goalkeeper, plus three outfield substitutes in an order you choose.

Only the XI scores. The bench scores nothing unless a substitution is triggered.

What are automatic substitutions?

If a player in your starting XI does not play in his Premier League match that gameweek, he is automatically substituted at the end of the gameweek.

Three things follow from that wording, and each one changes how you build the bench.

The trigger is zero minutes, not a bad score. A starter who plays 90 minutes and returns two points is never replaced, so the bench is no protection against a blank.

It resolves at the end of the gameweek. There is no live rescue and no partial credit.

The goalkeeper is separate. If your keeper does not play, the reserve keeper comes in automatically provided he played himself. There is no ordering decision to make there at all.

Does bench order matter in FPL?

For the outfield three, yes.

Substitutes come in left to right. Your first bench player replaces the non-playing starter, as long as he played and the swap keeps your formation legal. If he did not play, the second is used, then the third.

That makes bench order a free lever. It costs nothing, it takes one tap, and most squads still carry whatever order the game handed them in August.

The formation rule is the part that catches people out. If your XI has exactly three defenders and one of them is a no-show, only another defender can legally replace him. A bench of three midfielders sits there and scores nothing.

Which players actually deserve a bench slot?

Here the usual metric fails.

A bench player's job is to play. What he might score is irrelevant if he is not on the pitch, because a substitute who did not play is skipped entirely.

So the eight-gameweek total is the wrong column to sort by, and the next gameweek's number is the right one. Right now the two disagree.

Bogle is the leading scorer in this tier on 42 points, with a form figure of 9.0, and he reads the lowest Gameweek 6 number of the seven at 2.1. Leeds go to Arsenal, where The Algorithm has Arsenal on a 51.2 per cent clean-sheet chance and 2.14 expected goals, both the best in the round. His chance of not featuring at all is also roughly double the rest of this group's.

Mykolenko is last of the seven across the eight gameweeks at 23.0 and first in Gameweek 6 at 3.8. Everton travel to Hull on a 36.0 per cent clean-sheet chance, second best in the round, and he has played every minute.

That is the whole argument. Over eight gameweeks Bogle is the better asset. For one week on your bench, he is the worse pick, and the bench is a one-week decision you get to remake every week.

One more thing the table shows: three of the seven are Leeds. A bench built on Muharemović, Bogle and Justin is not three chances of a return, it is one fixture bought three times.

The bench has a low ceiling, and that is the point

None of this is worth spending money on.

The bench pays nothing in the weeks your XI all play, which is most weeks. It cannot rescue a starter who plays badly. And the formation rule can leave a legal-looking bench unable to come in at all.

Ordering it well is worth a handful of points across a season. It is worth doing because it is free, not because it is decisive. If you want the bench to actually pay, that is a chip decision, and it is worth reading when to play the Bench Boost rather than restructuring your squad around your substitutes.

FAQ

Do bench players score points in FPL? Not unless they come on through an automatic substitution. Points scored by a player who stays on your bench are not counted.

When do automatic substitutions happen? At the end of the gameweek, once every match has been played. They are never applied mid-round.

Does bench order affect my reserve goalkeeper? No. The keeper swap is automatic and separate from the outfield order, so the only thing that matters is whether your reserve keeper played.
