FPL Blank Gameweek: The Damage Is Decided in August

A blank gameweek is a spring problem that almost everybody treats as a spring problem. That is the mistake. By the time the cup draws tell you which clubs are missing a fixture, the squad you have to survive it with is already built, already priced up, and already too concentrated to fix in one free transfer.

So this is not a February article. It is the concentration test you can run on your squad today, in Gameweek 3, while every move is still cheap.

What is a blank gameweek in FPL?

A blank gameweek is a gameweek in which at least two Premier League clubs have no league fixture. Players from those clubs score nothing at all. Not a reduced score, not an appearance point: zero.

Blanks happen because league matches get postponed, usually to clear space for domestic cup rounds, and they cluster towards the end of the season around the FA Cup and EFL Cup calendar. The mirror image is the double gameweek, where a club plays twice in one week because a postponed fixture has been rescheduled into it.

Nobody can tell you which clubs will blank in 2027 yet, because the cup draws that cause it have not happened. That is exactly why the useful work is structural rather than calendar-based.

Your blank exposure is your ownership, and it is already extreme

Here is the crowd's squad as it stands on 31 August, the ten most-owned players in the game.

Eight of those ten players belong to five clubs. Arsenal supply three of them, Man Utd two, Chelsea two.

Now say the quiet part. Those five clubs are the ones you would expect to still be alive in two cup competitions in March, which is precisely when blanks land. The template is not accidentally concentrated in the clubs most likely to blank. It is concentrated there because those are the clubs that score goals and keep clean sheets, and the two things travel together.

That is the trade, and it is a fair one. What is not fair is arriving at the blank having never counted.

Run the count now

Open your squad and tally how many of your 15 come from your top five clubs. Eight or more and you are carrying real blank risk. Ten or more and one bad set of cup draws costs you a gameweek, not a transfer.

The fix is boring and it is cheap in September: one or two genuinely nailed players from mid-table clubs who will not be in a cup quarter-final. Buy them while they are at their starting price rather than in March when everyone needs the same enabler and it has risen 0.3.

What autosubs fix, and what they do not

Autosubs are the safety net people assume will cover a blank. They will not.

The mechanic: if a player in your starting XI plays no minutes, the first bench player who did play comes on in your chosen bench order, provided the substitution leaves a legal formation with at least three defenders and a goalkeeper.

A blanking player has played no minutes, so he is eligible for replacement. The catch is obvious once you say it out loud. If your bench blanks too, or your only playing substitute is a defender and the swap would break the formation, nothing comes on and you take the zero.

Verdict: in a blank week your bench order stops being an afterthought and becomes a decision. Rank the bench by who is certain to be on a pitch, not by who has the higher ceiling.

Free Hit or Wildcard?

FAQ

Do you get points if your player's team has no fixture? No. A blanking player scores zero, including no appearance points, and he can be replaced by an autosub if a bench player actually played.

When do FPL blank gameweeks happen? Mostly in the second half of the season, when league fixtures are postponed for cup rounds. The specific gameweeks are not knowable until the cup draws are made.

Should I plan my chips around blanks now? Plan the squad now and the chips later. Chip timing depends on which clubs blank, which nobody knows yet. Squad concentration is knowable today and is the part that actually decides how much a blank hurts.
