FPL Captain GW1: Haaland's Lead Is 0.15 Points

KnightManagers · 2026-08-09

The FPL captain GW1 question usually gets settled by whoever has the prettiest fixture. This year the projections make it duller and more interesting at the same time: the two best options are separated by 0.15 points, and the third name on the board is a centre-back.

All figures below are from our projections as of 7 August 2026, with prices and ownership taken from the official FPL API the same week. The deadline is Friday 21 August at 18:30 BST.

Who is the best FPL captain for GW1?

This is the board, ranked on projected points for Gameweek 1 alone. "No-minutes risk" is the chance the player does not get on the pitch at all.

Player Price Owned GW1 projection No-minutes risk
Haaland (MCI) £15.5m 74.4% 6.8 9%
B.Fernandes (MUN) £12.0m 48.6% 6.6 10%
Gabriel (ARS) £8.0m 26.5% 5.8 8%
Saka (ARS) £9.5m 10.8% 4.7 17%
Gibbs-White (NFO) £8.0m 11.6% 4.7 11%
Mbeumo (MUN) £8.0m 20.2% 4.6 14%
Semenyo (MCI) £8.5m 23.2% 4.5 13%
Cunha (MUN) £8.0m 13.6% 4.5 15%
Szoboszlai (LIV) £7.0m 46.5% 3.9 13%
João Pedro (CHE) £7.5m 54.9% 3.9 14%

Read the gaps rather than the order. First to second is 0.15 points. Second to fourth is 1.9 points.

That is the whole story of GW1 captaincy. There are two credible armbands and then a cliff, and the choice between the two is not a points decision at all. It is a decision about price and ownership.

You can check every one of these numbers yourself on our free FPL predicted points table, which updates daily.

Erling Haaland (£15.5m) — Manchester City

Fixtures: Bournemouth (H)

The fixture is the argument. Our own fixture ratings, which rate every team's attack and defence separately and then read each fixture both ways, give City 2.43 expected goals at home to Bournemouth, and Bournemouth a 9 per cent chance of a clean sheet. Only Coventry, away at Arsenal, rate worse in the round.

His no-minutes risk is 9 per cent, among the lowest of any attacker in the game. There is no rotation story here worth losing sleep over in the opening week.

The catch is that 74.4 per cent of managers already own him, so captaining him is not an edge. It is the absence of a mistake.

Bottom line: if you own Haaland, captain him. Just be honest that you are buying safety rather than rank, at the highest ownership of any player in the game.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) — Manchester United

Fixtures: Hull (A)

United travel to a promoted side, and our ratings have them at 1.83 expected goals with Hull given a 16 per cent clean sheet chance. That is a softer fixture than it looks on a printed ticker, because Hull's defensive rating is the third weakest in the round.

Fernandes projects 6.6 for Gameweek 1 against Haaland's 6.8, and 33.8 against 37.1 across the opening six. His no-minutes risk is 10 per cent. He is £3.5m cheaper and 25.8 percentage points less owned.

However, United's forward line is not settled. Šeško is carrying a shin injury and is officially flagged at a 75 per cent chance of playing, and our own numbers put his chance of no Gameweek 1 minutes at 50.5 per cent.

Bottom line: at 48.6 per cent owned Fernandes is not a differential, but he is the better captain per pound by a distance. If you do not own Haaland, do not take a hit to fix it. Captain Fernandes.

The third name on the board is a centre-back

Only Haaland and Fernandes project higher in Gameweek 1 than Gabriel (£8.0m), across the 40 players our projections rank highest over the opening six.

Arsenal host Coventry, and both ends of that fixture are extremes. Arsenal rate 2.49 expected goals, the highest of any team in the round, and carry a 56 per cent clean sheet chance, also the highest. Coventry's clean sheet chance is 8 per cent, the lowest.

William Saliba is out for an extended period with a back injury, which has firmed up Gabriel and David Raya as the secure ways into that defence rather than complicating them. Gabriel's no-minutes risk is 8 per cent, the lowest on the board.

The tempting alternative, Bukayo Saka at £9.5m, carries a 17 per cent no-minutes risk, the highest of anyone in the top 10 and roughly double Gabriel's.

Nobody sensible captains a centre-back in Gameweek 1. The point is where Arsenal's value actually sits, and at 26.5 per cent ownership against Saka's 10.8, plenty of managers have already worked that out. We wrote up the same logic one position further back in our goalkeeper rankings.

What would change this call

Team news. The deadline is 18:30 BST on the Friday and the opening match kicks off at 20:00, so nothing at all is confirmed before you are locked in. A late press conference on the Thursday moves this board more than any projection does.

Ownership drift is the other one. If Haaland climbs above 80 per cent, the case for a Fernandes armband gets stronger purely on rank maths, not on points.

And a caveat worth saying out loud: Gameweek 1 is the single least informed decision of the season. Nobody has seen a competitive line-up. We are all guessing, some of us with better numbers than others.

FAQ

Who should I captain in GW1 of FPL 2026/27? Haaland, narrowly, on 6.8 projected points against Bruno Fernandes on 6.6. If you do not own Haaland, Fernandes is the captain and is not worth a transfer to correct.

Should I captain a differential in GW1? The board says no. After the top two there is a 1.9 point drop, which is a large amount of expected value to give up for a rank punt in a week where nobody has any information.

Which cheap player has the best GW1 fixture? Gabriel at £8.0m is the standout on projected points, on the round's best fixture at both ends. For the wider value picture, see our best value in the game breakdown.
