FPL GW9 Preview: Thiago or the £1m Saving?

KnightManagers · 2026-10-31

If João Pedro’s injury forces a forward transfer, Thiago is my first GW9 choice at the same current £7.8m price. If you already own Calvert-Lewin, I would keep him rather than pay to make that switch. A replacement purchase and an upgrade to a healthy squad are different decisions.

The Algorithm gives Thiago 5.1 xP against Forest, ahead of Jackson’s 4.0 against Fulham. Across the next eight gameweeks, however, Calvert-Lewin projects 33.9 against Thiago’s 32.0, while costing £1.7m less. There is no universal instruction to buy the same forward.

The GW9 deadline is Saturday 31 October at 11:00 UK time (GMT), which is 12:00 in Tirana. Projections were published on 30 October and cover GW9–16. Prices, ownership and Friday team news were checked that afternoon. These are forecasts, not promised returns; gaps use unrounded figures.

Who should captain your team in GW9?

Haaland leads at 6.4 xP. Palmer follows at 5.7, a gap of 0.6 before captain doubling. Rogers is third at 5.1, fractionally ahead of Thiago before rounding. Treat that pair as effectively level.

Captain option Club GW9 fixture Price Owned League points / minutes GW9 xP
Haaland Man City Brighton (H) £15.8m 78.5% 66 / 709 6.4
Palmer Chelsea Man United (H) £9.8m 27.3% 37 / 698 5.7
Rogers Chelsea Man United (H) £8.0m 50.5% 41 / 700 5.1

I would captain Haaland if you own him, with a reliable vice-captain. City confirm he is available after sitting out Wednesday’s cup tie, although that is not a confirmed start. Across GW9–16 he totals 49.2 xP; the armband decision uses GW9.

Palmer’s red card does not rule him out of GW9: his one-match suspension was served in Wednesday’s Liverpool cup tie. Eligibility is not confirmation of a Saturday start. The losing Palmer purchases and captaincy outcomes are recorded in our GW8 review.

What does the fixture picture favour?

City have the strongest GW9 attacking forecast, at 2.3 expected goals against Brighton. Spurs against Palace and Chelsea against United both read 1.9.

Spurs lead the clean-sheet forecast at 42.3%. Brighton’s trip to City carries a 10.2% clean-sheet chance. That matters when choosing which defender to start; it does not make every Brighton holding an urgent sale.

Should João Pedro owners buy Thiago or Jackson?

Alonso has confirmed João Pedro will miss a few weeks with a thigh injury, without committing to an exact return date. The Chelsea forward is £7.8m and 55.7% owned, with 47 points from 521 league minutes. This is a confirmed absence to plan around.

Jackson is the popular replacement candidate. He has attracted 1,389,161 purchases in the live transfer period since the GW8 deadline, checked on 30 October. His two goals against City explain the attention, and his £6.8m price leaves £1.0m more for the rest of your squad than Thiago.

Forward Price Owned League points / minutes GW9 xP GW9–16 xP
Thiago, Brentford £7.8m 9.2% 23 / 712 5.1 32.0
Jackson, Aston Villa £6.8m 17.8% 34 / 547 4.0 28.3
Calvert-Lewin, Leeds £6.1m 21.1% 35 / 683 4.2 33.9

For a new purchase, I prefer Thiago when the extra £1.0m does not weaken another starter. His advantage over Jackson is 1.1 xP this week and 3.8 across eight gameweeks, assuming the same starting place in your FPL team throughout and before deductions or captaincy.

Jackson remains reasonable when the saving funds a better overall XI. If you already bought him, I would not spend four points switching to Thiago: the eight-gameweek margin is 0.2 points short of covering that deduction.

Thiago is also the highest-projected GW9 player below 10% ownership. His caveats are specific: only one league goal so far, four yellow cards, and a drop to 3.2 xP at Brighton in GW10. Another league booking triggers a one-match league ban. He played the full cup match on Wednesday, scoring in stoppage time. Brentford report no new injury concerns following that match; this does not guarantee his weekend minutes.

Should Calvert-Lewin owners follow the sales?

No automatic sale. There have been 218,562 transfers out in the same live period, but his eight-gameweek forecast is higher than either forward above.

Thiago adds 0.9 projected points in GW9 while giving up 1.9 across the full window and costing £1.7m more. A hit makes that switch less attractive still. I would hold Calvert-Lewin unless a broader change to the team justifies it.

The defensive differential: Van Hecke

Van Hecke (£4.9m), Spurs. At 9.0% owned, he has 38 points and all 720 league minutes. Palace visit next. His 4.7 GW9 xP leads every defender, and he totals 30.0 across eight gameweeks.

De Cuyper is the useful comparison: £5.3m, 42.5% owned, 60 points from 670 minutes, but 2.5 xP at City and 27.1 over the window.

For a new defender purchase, I prefer Van Hecke at £0.4m less. For an existing De Cuyper owner, check your bench first. The forecast gain is 2.2 this week but only 2.9 over eight, so I would not make the switch on a four-point hit alone.

What has Friday’s team news changed?

Rogers completed Wednesday’s Liverpool cup tie and scored Chelsea’s penalty while Palmer was suspended. That does not establish a change of league penalty taker. Both rank highly, but Rogers has the midweek workload that Palmer avoided.

Chelsea now confirm Caicedo is available, while Lacroix’s hamstring injury keeps him out until at least the international break. Neither update confirms an attacking starter. Check late news, actual selling prices and the three-per-club limit before committing.

GW9 questions

Is Jackson a bad purchase?

No. His saving can improve another position. Thiago has the higher immediate forecast; Calvert-Lewin has the higher eight-gameweek total among these three.

Should I take a hit for Van Hecke?

Not for the De Cuyper switch alone. Its projected eight-gameweek gain does not cover four points.
