FPL Captain GW3: The Armband Is Not a Decision

KnightManagers · 2026-09-01

The first two gameweeks of this season produced captaincy calls decided by rounding errors. The gap between the top two options was 0.11 in Gameweek 1 and 0.08 in Gameweek 2. In Gameweek 3 it is 1.57. This is the week you stop thinking about the armband and start thinking about the transfer, and the numbers below explain why, plus the one decision that is actually live.

All projections are The Algorithm's expected points as of 28 August 2026, and you can check every one of them on our free FPL predicted points table.

Who is the FPL captain for GW3?

Erling Haaland (£15.5m) — Man City

Fixtures: Coventry (H)

Haaland reads 6.99 for Gameweek 3. That is not just the top of the board, it is the widest lead any player has held over the field in either round so far. The next name is 1.57 behind, and because the armband doubles, the real distance a rival captain has to make up is 3.14 points.

He has 15 points from 180 minutes after two rounds, on 1.42 expected goal involvement, and he is owned by 70.1 per cent of the game. That ownership matters here in the opposite of the usual way. Captaining Haaland this week is not an edge. It is a floor. Seven in ten managers will do it, and the 30 per cent who do not are the ones taking a position.

Man City are at home to a promoted side. Motivation is a non-factor in the first week of September, when every squad in the league still believes its own story, so the honest read is that this is a fixture and a finisher, nothing more complicated.

Verdict: captain, and do not spend another minute on it.

The armband is settled. The vice-captain is not.

This is where the actual thinking goes, because three players sit inside 0.29 of each other for second place.

Bukayo Saka (£9.5m) — Arsenal. Fixtures: Chelsea (H). Reads 5.41, with 20 points from 157 minutes and 1.39 expected goal involvement. The interesting part is that he is owned by 10.4 per cent.

Dominik Szoboszlai (£7.0m) — Liverpool. Fixtures: Ipswich (A). Reads 5.16, 12 points, 1.45 expected goal involvement, owned by 41.9 per cent.

Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) — Man Utd. Fixtures: Everton (A). Reads 5.13 and leads every one of the 40 most-owned players in the game on expected goal involvement with 2.84 from 180 minutes. He has 25 points, the highest total on the board. Owned by 48.2 per cent.

Those points totals are provisional until Gameweek 2 bonus is confirmed.

Verdict: Fernandes is the vice-captain. The projections separate the three of them by less than a third of a point, which is not enough to call, so the tiebreak is the underlying numbers, and his 2.84 is not close to anybody else's.

Is a differential captain worth it in GW3?

Not against a 3.14-point head start. But the shape of this week is unusual and worth naming, because the model's second-best armband is also the least owned option at the top.

Saka is owned by 10.4 per cent. Szoboszlai, ranked below him, is owned by 41.9 per cent. Fernandes, also ranked below him, is owned by 48.2 per cent. Normally a differential captain means reaching down the board. Here it means reaching down the ownership column while going up the projection column.

If you are chasing rank rather than protecting it, Saka is the pick, and you should know the price: you are giving up 1.57 projected points before the doubling, against a player owned by seven in ten of your rivals.

Verdict: captain Haaland unless you are already behind in your mini-league and need variance. Then it is Saka, and only Saka.

What changes in Gameweek 4

This is the part worth acting on today. Haaland's Gameweek 4 reads 5.27, and three players are projected above him: Palmer at 5.51, João Pedro at 5.47 and Saka at 5.35.

So the free transfer you make this week should be aimed at the round after this one, not at this one. Palmer (£9.6m, 18.1 per cent owned) reads 3.10 for Gameweek 3 and 5.51 for Gameweek 4. João Pedro (£7.6m, 69.7 per cent owned) reads 3.17 then 5.47. Both are in their worst week of the run right now and their best week immediately after it.

If you were planning to sell either on Friday, you would be selling the trough and skipping the spike.

Should you triple captain Haaland in GW3?

No, and the reason is specific rather than cautious. As it stands his Gameweek 5 reads 7.07 and his Gameweek 7 reads 7.13, both above this week's 6.99. A chip that doubles your best week should be spent on your best week, and on current numbers this is not it. Our guide to what the Triple Captain is actually worth sets out the maths properly.
