FPL Differentials: How to Pick One That Pays
Most differential picks fail for the same reason. The manager checks the ownership number, likes how low it is, and never checks the second number.
A differential is not a player nobody owns. It is a player nobody owns whose projection sits close to the player you would have owned instead. Ownership decides what you win if it lands. The projection gap decides what it costs you every week it does not.
Get those two the wrong way round and you are paying points for the privilege of being different.
What counts as an FPL differential?
The template is easy to see. João Pedro is owned by 72% of the game, Haaland 71.2%, Bruno Fernandes 47.5% and Calafiori 46.9%. Own all four and your score moves with everybody else's.
Under about 10% owned is where your rank actually moves, because most of the field cannot follow you there. Between 10% and 20% is the interesting middle: enough managers own him that he is not a punt, few enough that a return still gains you ground.
Why low ownership on its own is worthless
Ownership is the reward, not the case.
If you drop a player projected at 5.7 for a player projected at 4.1, you have handed back 1.6 points before a ball is kicked, and you have to do that every gameweek you hold him. Over a month that is a transfer's worth of points spent on nothing but scarcity.
The pick only works when the gap is small enough that you barely notice it, and the ownership gap is wide enough that a single return moves you.
The projection gap is the number that decides it
Saka is the cleanest live example. He is £9.5m and 11.3% owned, and The Algorithm reads him 5.7 for Gameweek 4, second among the midfielders on our board behind Palmer's 5.9. Palmer is 20.9% owned.
So the projection gap is 0.2 and the ownership gap is 9.6 percentage points. That is the shape you want: almost nothing given up, a real edge if he returns.
Compare that with a 3% pick projected a point and a half below the man he replaces. Same ownership logic, completely different price.

The second test: has he actually earned it?
The projection gap tells you the cost. The underlying numbers tell you whether the points so far were real.
Scott at Bournemouth is £6.0m and 3.5% owned with 24 points from 266 minutes. Genuinely differential, genuinely productive so far, and 0.63 expected goal involvement across three rounds. The points arrived ahead of the chances. Buying him is a bet that the finishing repeats, not that the role produces.
Bogle at Leeds is the same shape further out: £4.5m, 1.1% owned, 22 points, 0.93 expected goal involvement in 217 minutes. He is also short of a full set of minutes, which is the risk nobody prices at that ownership.
Neither is a bad player. They are both bets on repetition, and repetition is the thing three matches cannot tell you about.

Read the table as a ladder rather than a list. Saka costs you almost nothing to own and pays you 9.6 points of ownership if he returns. Tarkowski is the boring version of the same trade at a third of the price. The bottom two are where the ownership number is doing all the persuading, which is exactly the trap.
When a differential is the wrong move
Two situations where I would not bother.
If you are leading your mini league, ownership gaps are how you lose it, not how you win it. Hold the template and let the chasers take the variance.
And if the differential costs you a hit, the bar moves. A minus four has to be earned back before the pick is even level, which is a different question from whether the player is good. Our note on how many free transfers you get and when a hit pays does that arithmetic.
FAQ
How many differentials should I own? Two or three in a fifteen is plenty. Every one you add widens the range of outcomes in both directions, and a squad of eleven differentials is not a strategy, it is a lottery ticket.
Is a 12% player still a differential? Yes, and it is often the best band to shop in. Nearly nine in ten managers still do not own him, and the projection gap at that ownership is usually much smaller than at 3%.
Do differentials matter more in a mini league? They matter differently. In a small league you are playing the specific squads around you, so the pick that gains ground is the one your rivals do not have, whatever the overall ownership says.
