Best FPL Midfielders 2026/27: Ndiaye Over Palmer
Midfield is where most of a squad's money goes, and this season the market has an unusual shape. There is one genuine premium, and then a plateau eighteen players deep. Get the plateau right at £6.0m instead of £9.5m and you fund a defence.
All projections below are The Algorithm's expected points across Gameweeks 1 to 6, as of 11 August 2026. Prices and ownership are today's official figures.
The midfield board for Gameweeks 1 to 6
| Player | Club | Price | Owned | xP GW1-6 | Points per £m |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bruno Fernandes | Man Utd | £12.0m | 48.3% | 33.2 | 2.77 |
| Saka | Arsenal | £9.5m | 10.7% | 25.3 | 2.66 |
| Semenyo | Man City | £8.5m | 25.7% | 24.7 | 2.91 |
| Gibbs-White | Nott'm Forest | £8.0m | 11.6% | 24.1 | 3.01 |
| Palmer | Chelsea | £9.5m | 11.3% | 23.9 | 2.52 |
| Szoboszlai | Liverpool | £7.0m | 44.6% | 23.7 | 3.39 |
| Wirtz | Liverpool | £7.5m | 14.0% | 23.6 | 3.15 |
| Mbeumo | Man Utd | £8.0m | 22.8% | 23.5 | 2.94 |
| Rice | Arsenal | £7.5m | 22.1% | 23.4 | 3.12 |
| Cunha | Man Utd | £8.0m | 12.9% | 21.9 | 2.74 |
| Ndiaye | Everton | £6.0m | 15.3% | 21.8 | 3.63 |
| Gakpo | Liverpool | £7.0m | 3.4% | 21.8 | 3.11 |
| Dewsbury-Hall | Everton | £6.5m | 3.7% | 21.7 | 3.34 |
| Tavernier | Bournemouth | £6.0m | 1.9% | 21.0 | 3.50 |
| Anderson | Man City | £6.5m | 11.7% | 21.0 | 3.23 |
Two things jump out of that table.
The first is the gap at the top. Bruno Fernandes projects 33.2 and the next midfielder is on 25.3, so one player is 7.9 points clear of the entire position over six gameweeks. Nothing else in midfield has that kind of separation.
The second is what happens below him. From Saka on 25.3 down to Gravenberch on 19.8, eighteen midfielders sit inside 5.5 points of each other, and they are priced anywhere from £6.0m to £9.5m for effectively the same return. That is the whole argument of this post.
Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m), Man Utd
Fixtures: Hull (a), Ipswich (h), Everton (a), Man City (h), Fulham (a), Spurs (h).
He is the one premium the numbers back, and the fixtures are the reason. The Algorithm gives Man Utd 2.08 expected goals away at Hull in Gameweek 1, the third-biggest attacking number in the round, and as it stands the following week at home to Ipswich is bigger still at 2.43.
Last season he returned 235 points from 3,065 minutes with 23.07 xGI, which is the sort of volume that makes a £12.0m midfielder defensible rather than reckless.
At 48.3% owned he is not a differential, and he is not meant to be. He is the slot you take the consensus on so you can be brave elsewhere.
Ndiaye (£6.0m), Everton
Fixtures: Palace (h), Bournemouth (a), Man Utd (h), Spurs (a), Ipswich (h), Hull (a).
Ndiaye tops the value column at 3.63 projected points per million, and the comparison that matters is with Palmer. Ndiaye projects 21.8 over the opening six. Palmer projects 23.9. The £3.5m upgrade buys 2.1 points across six gameweeks.
The fixtures are not the case for him, and I would rather say so than dress it up. Everton's expected goals over the opening six add up to 8.2 as things stand, against Man City's 12.6, and their fat weeks arrive late: 1.77 at home to Ipswich in Gameweek 5, then Hull away.
The case is price and role. He managed 128 points and 11.09 xGI in 2,781 minutes last season, and Everton's midfield minutes are less contested than usual right now, with Garner (£6.0m) carrying a groin flag and an expected return date of 22 August, which falls inside Gameweek 1.
Verdict: at 15.3% owned he is not a secret, but he is the cheapest legitimate route into the plateau, and every squad needs two of those.
Dewsbury-Hall (£6.5m), Everton
Fixtures: Palace (h), Bournemouth (a), Man Utd (h), Spurs (a), Ipswich (h), Hull (a).
If Ndiaye is the value pick, Dewsbury-Hall is the differential version of the same bet. He projects 21.7, third in the value column at 3.34 per million, and only 3.7% of managers own him.
He scored 151 points at 4.9 per game from 2,629 minutes last season with 9.69 xGI, which for £6.5m is a starting midfielder's output rather than an enabler's.
Owning both Everton midfielders doubles your exposure to a side whose opening four fixtures are ordinary, so treat him as the Gameweek 5 buy if you would rather stagger it. Fewer than one in 25 managers have him.
Szoboszlai (£7.0m), Liverpool, and the crowd is right
Fixtures: Newcastle (a), Forest (h), Ipswich (a), Fulham (h), Bournemouth (a), Man City (h).
Sometimes the popular pick is popular for a reason. Szoboszlai is 44.6% owned and sits third in the value column on 3.39 points per million, so there is nothing to argue with. Liverpool's opening six carries 12.3 expected goals as it stands, second only to Man City.
The interesting part is his own teammate. Wirtz is £7.5m, 14.0% owned, and The Algorithm separates the pair by 0.1 points over six gameweeks, 23.7 to 23.6, with Wirtz the higher of the two in Gameweek 1 at 3.90 to 3.65.
Verdict: if you want the safety, take Szoboszlai. If you want the differential, £0.5m buys you the same projection at a third of the ownership. Both are defensible, and anyone telling you this is obvious is guessing.
The two traps at this end of the pitch
Palmer at £9.5m is the clearest one. He is the worst per million of any midfielder on the board at 2.52, and our model puts his chance of no Gameweek 1 minutes at 26.4%, roughly double every comparable name. He is a Gameweek 2 buy, not a Gameweek 1 one.
Bruno Guimarães at £7.0m is the quieter trap. He projects 19.9 while carrying a 22.0% chance of no minutes in a given week, the second-highest of any midfielder we rate. At 10.2% owned that is a rotation risk being priced as a bargain.
FAQ
Who is the best value FPL midfielder for 2026/27? Ndiaye at £6.0m, on 3.63 projected points per million over the opening six. Tavernier at £6.0m is next on 3.50, and only 1.9% of managers own him.
Is Szoboszlai worth it at £7.0m? Yes. He is third in the value column and his side has the second-biggest attacking run over the opening six. The alternative is Wirtz at £0.5m more for the same projection and 30 fewer points of ownership.
Should I own Saka or Palmer at £9.5m? Saka, if either. He projects 25.3 against Palmer's 23.9, and Arsenal have the biggest number in Gameweek 1 at both ends. Fantasy Football Scout noted in July that both are "back beneath the £10m mark, dropping £0.5m and £1.0m from their starting prices 12 months ago", so this band is cheaper than it was and still finishes last on value.
How many premium midfielders should I own? One, on these numbers. The gap between Bruno Fernandes and second place is 7.9 points; the gap between second and twentieth is 5.5.
