Is Semenyo Worth £8.5m in FPL 2026/27?

KnightManagers · 2026-08-12

Semenyo is £8.5m and 26.1% of managers have already decided. The question worth asking nine days out is not whether he scores points, it is whether £8.5m is the right amount to pay for them when Saka is £1.0m more and Mbeumo is £0.5m less. So: is Semenyo worth it in FPL 2026/27? On our numbers, yes, with one flaw you should name out loud before you buy.

Figures below are The Algorithm's, as of 12 August.

What our projections actually say

Over the opening six gameweeks The Algorithm has Semenyo on 24.7 projected points. That is third among all midfielders, behind Bruno Fernandes on 33.2 and Saka on 25.3, and it is 1.2 clear of Mbeumo on 23.5 and 0.8 clear of Palmer on 23.9.

Then divide by price, which is where the midfield market keeps inverting itself.

Midfielder Price Owned GW1-6 points Points per £m
Mbeumo £8.0m 23.6% 23.5 2.94
Semenyo £8.5m 26.1% 24.7 2.91
B.Fernandes £12.0m 48.3% 33.2 2.77
Saka £9.5m 22.0% 25.3 2.66
Palmer £9.5m 23.9 23.9 2.52

Saka is 0.6 points better over six gameweeks and costs £1.0m more. Palmer is 0.8 points worse and costs £1.0m more. Neither of those is a disaster, and both are the sort of gap that gets swallowed by one penalty or one deflection, which is precisely the point: at this price band you are not choosing between good and bad players, you are choosing where £1.0m sits in the rest of your squad.

The fixtures behind the number

Fixtures: BOU (H), CRY (A), COV (H), MUN (A), SUN (H), LIV (A)

Man City carry the best attacking run in the league across the opening six on our numbers, and as it stands it averages 2.11 goals expected a game, narrowly ahead of Liverpool on 2.06 and Arsenal on 2.00. The individual weeks matter more than the average, because the shape of Semenyo's projection tracks them almost exactly.

City are at 2.48 goals expected at home to Bournemouth in Gameweek 1 and, currently, 2.80 at home to Coventry in Gameweek 3. Semenyo's two best weeks in the window are Gameweek 5 at 4.90 and Gameweek 3 at 4.65.

The two soft spots are the away trips. City are currently at 1.47 at Old Trafford in Gameweek 4 and 1.55 at Anfield in Gameweek 6, their two weakest attacking fixtures of the six, and Semenyo's two lowest weeks are the same two: 3.39 and 3.16.

That is a useful thing to know before you buy rather than after. He is a hold through Gameweek 3 and a candidate to move on around the double away swing, which is exactly the sort of six-week shape that a one-week ownership decision hides.

The flaw: this is a rotation risk, not a fixture risk

Nothing in the run above is the reason to hesitate. The reason to hesitate is minutes.

City are chasing a title and playing in every competition available to them, and the honest position pre-season is that nobody outside the building knows how the attacking rotation lands in September. Last season's totals tell you what kind of player he is (202 points in 3,200 minutes, 11.1 expected goals and 14.21 expected goal involvements) and nothing at all about how many of City's fixtures he starts this year. Last season is last season. The role that matters is the one he has now.

That is a real risk, and it is priced. £8.5m for the third-best midfield projection in the game is not what a nailed premium costs.

The verdict

Buy him, and buy him instead of the £9.5m options rather than alongside them. On our board he gives you 97% of Saka's six-week output for 89% of the price, in the best attacking run in the league, and the £1.0m you save is the difference between a fifth defender who plays and one who never will.

The counter-case is fair and I will state it: if you want the safest 26% of the midfield market you take Saka, because Arsenal's opening fixture is the biggest number in the round and 0.6 points is a rounding error against certainty. This is a value call, not a certainty call.

One more number for the differential hunters. Rogers is £7.5m and 27.2% owned, more than Semenyo, and he does not appear anywhere in our top 40 for the opening six. That gap is the one I would be arguing about in a mini-league chat this week.

FAQ

Is Semenyo a good FPL pick for Gameweek 1? Yes. He is fourth among midfielders in our Gameweek 1 projections at 4.39, behind Bruno Fernandes, Saka and Gibbs-White, with City at home to Bournemouth and 2.48 goals expected.

Who is the best value midfielder around £8.0m to £8.5m in FPL 2026/27? Mbeumo on points per million at 2.94, with Semenyo a fraction behind on 2.91 and 1.2 points ahead in raw projected points. Our full midfield board ranks the whole position both ways.

How much rotation risk does Semenyo carry? Enough to name. Pre-season nobody can tell you how City's attacking minutes settle, and any pundit who says otherwise is guessing. If your squad cannot survive him being benched in one gameweek out of six, buy elsewhere.

Is he better value than Haaland? Different question, same arithmetic. We answered it for the premium striker in is Haaland worth £15.5m.
