What Does the Vice Captain Do in FPL? The GW1 Case

KnightManagers · 2026-08-14

Managers spend the last ten minutes before a deadline agonising over the vice captain. It is almost always ten minutes wasted. The vice armband pays out on one condition only, and that condition is rarer than most people assume.

Gameweek 1 is the exception, and it is a week away. The deadline is Friday 21 August at 18:30.

What does the vice captain do in FPL?

The vice captain takes the double only if your captain plays zero minutes in the gameweek. That is the whole rule.

If your captain starts on the bench and comes on for one minute, he is still your captain and his score is still doubled. The vice gets nothing extra. There is no partial handover, no "he only played twenty minutes so we will switch it", nothing.

And if neither of them plays, you get no doubled score at all. Two blanks, one armband wasted.

When does the vice captain actually take over?

Rarely. Across the six realistic armband options for Gameweek 1, The Algorithm puts the chance of no minutes in the 9 to 13 per cent range. Call it one week in nine.

That number is the whole story. In eight weeks out of nine your vice captain is just a normal player in your side, scoring what he scores. The decision only exists in the ninth.

What is the vice captain armband actually worth?

Suppose you are torn between two vice options separated by 1.5 projected points. That gap only ever materialises in the weeks the armband moves, so across a gameweek it is worth about two tenths of a point.

Two tenths. That is a fifth of an assist bonus, and it is roughly the difference between the fourteenth and fifteenth best midfielder in the game.

Meanwhile the captain decision itself is worth several points a week, every week, guaranteed. If you have ten minutes before a deadline, they belong to the captain, not the vice.

However, there is one way to lose real points here, and it is not the choice itself. It is pairing your captain and vice at the same club. One team-news line about a rested XI or an illness sweeping a squad can take out both, and then you have converted a hedge into a coin that lands on its edge. Split them across two fixtures.

Why Gameweek 1 is the week it matters most

Every other week of the season you pick the vice with evidence: last week's line-up, a press conference, a manager who has named the same eleven four times running. In Gameweek 1 you have none of that.

You have pre-season minutes, a summer of transfers, and eleven fixtures nobody has seen yet. The chance of a surprise omission is at its highest of the entire season, and it lands on the one week you have the least information.

So this is the week to actually spend thirty seconds on it. Not ten minutes. Thirty seconds.

The six realistic armbands for Gameweek 1

Projections below are The Algorithm's expected points for Gameweek 1 as of 13 August 2026, alongside current price and ownership.

Player Club Price Owned GW1 projection Fixture
Haaland Man City £15.5m 73.5% 6.09 Bournemouth (H)
B.Fernandes Man Utd £12.0m 48.1% 5.94 Hull (A)
Gabriel Arsenal £8.0m 27.0% 5.59 Coventry (H)
Semenyo Man City £8.5m 27.2% 4.48 Bournemouth (H)
Mbeumo Man Utd £8.0m 26.0% 4.40 Hull (A)
Raya Arsenal £6.0m 31.1% 4.37 Coventry (H)

Three things jump out of that table.

The first is that the top two are separated by 0.15 points. Erling Haaland (£15.5m) is owned by 73.5 per cent of the game and scored 239 points at 6.8 per game last season, and Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) is owned by 48.1 per cent and scored 235 at 6.7. Man City are home to Bournemouth with 2.47 goals expected. Man Utd are away at Hull with 2.15. There is almost nothing in it, which is exactly why the captain and vice pairing is nearly free this week: whichever way round you have them, you own the two best options in the game.

The second is Gabriel (£8.0m, 27.0 per cent owned, 209 points and 6.5 per game last season). A defender is the third-best armband on the board. Arsenal at home to Coventry is the biggest number of the round at both ends: a 60.9 per cent clean sheet and 2.68 goals expected. Most managers will not captain a centre-back and most managers are probably right, but as a vice he is a genuinely serious option and almost nobody will use him there.

The third is a warning. Bukayo Saka carries a 20 per cent chance of no minutes in Gameweek 1 on our numbers, the highest of any player in our top twelve. He is a fine captain if he starts. He is a poor vice, because a vice exists precisely to be the one who definitely plays.

The verdict

Captain Haaland, vice Bruno Fernandes. Two different fixtures, two different clubs, 0.15 points between them, and the two highest projections in the game.

If you are one of the 26.5 per cent who do not own Haaland, invert it: Fernandes captain, Gabriel vice. That is a 5.94 and a 5.59 across two matches, which is a stronger pair than most managers who do own Haaland will end up with.

Then stop thinking about it and go and check whether your fourth defender is playing.

FAQ

Does the vice captain get double points if my captain is benched? Only if the captain plays zero minutes. If he comes off the bench and plays even one minute, he keeps the double and the vice scores normally.

What happens if my captain and vice captain both do not play? You get no doubled score for that gameweek. Nobody else in your side inherits the armband.

Should my vice captain be my second-best player? Not necessarily. It should be the highest-projected player you are most confident actually starts, in a different fixture from your captain. Ceiling matters less here than certainty.
